Re: new to area want to explore
Sun, November 12, 2006 - 9:09 PMHi Rob. Welcome!!
I'm not very brave when it comes to winter hiking, but I bet some of the others are :)
Another great place to check for places to hike and people to hike with is:

Mon, November 13, 2006 - 1:36 PMAre you looking for hiking or winter sports?
If you want straight out winter hiking then head west, young man. There are lots of great possibilities on the coast, and you're situated well to make them day trips. If you're talking 'shoeing, etc. Mt Rainier has lots of great spots -- but check to make sure the roads are open before you head out. Those rains last week did some serious damage to our gem of a park. -

Re: new to area want to explore
Mon, November 13, 2006 - 2:39 PMI really like snowshoeing around Alpental (up at Snoqualmie.) There's some groomed trails, and plenty of fresh track backcountry to go and play around on. Off the beaten path is "at your risk" because it is first and foremost a ski/snowboard backcountry area, but that means strap your board or a pair of tele's on your pack, go for a long 'shoe up and take the fast way back down.

There's some overlap between the Seattle rock climbing and hiking meetup groups and some rockclimbers organized a snowshoe event recently. You might contact some of the folks who attended about areas or finding people to go with.
Hope this helps, G
